Israel and Syria have both announced a desire to move their country toward nuclear power as an alternative energy source for electricity.The two countries were participating at a conference in Paris organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development when they made their intentions known.Addressing Israel’s desire Infrastructure Minister Uzi Mandau told delegates at the conference, “In a region like the Middle East, we can only depend on ourselves. Building a nuclear reactor to produce electricity will allow Israel to develop energy independence.”Israel relies on the importation of coal for much of its energy generation and has been looking to find an alternative source. That appears to be nuclear power as a site is said to already be selected for a reactor.While a nuclear plant in Israel appears to be more acceptable to Western powers the idea of Syria holding the same capabilities has not exactly been embraced. Hawaii was hit by a 4.4 magnitude earthquake Monday evening around 6:30. Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has said progress was being made in the efforts to free a British couple that has been held by pirates for four months.The couple, Paul and Rachel Chandler, were sailing in the Indian Ocean last October when their boat was commandeered by Somali pirates. A ransom demand for the couple was made but the British government has said they will not negotiate with pirates.Media reports had indicated that the fate of the Chandlers was slipping as they had been separated from each other since January and their morale was low. The remains of former Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos have reportedly been found by police, three months after his body was removed from his grave by unknown assailants.Police received a tip that the remains of Papadopoulos were dumped at a Nicosia cemetery and those remains are now undergoing DNA testing to determine if they were the remains of the former president.Papadopoulos passed away in December 2008 having served as Cyprus’ president from 2003 thru February 2008. Despite agreeing to a ten-month pause in settlement building in the West Bank Israeli authorities have authorized the construction of 112 new apartments in the contentious region, a move that could jeopardize talks with Palestinian leaders.According to Israel the construction of apartment buildings would be in a Jewish settlement in the West Bank, an area that was not part of their earlier freeze agreement.It is yet to be seen if the construction with bring down a recent agreement for indirect talks but U.S. Envoy George Mitchell said on Monday he was hopeful the conversation would continue. Mitchell said the sides have “begun to discuss the structure and scope of these talks and I will return to the region next week to continue our discussions.”Israel defended the decision to approve construction in the settlement of Beitar Illit, saying it would fill a security gap between divided apartment buildings. An early morning earthquake in Turkey on Monday left more than 50 people dead and about 70 others injured. The 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Elazig province at 4:32 a.m.The temblor was located near the meeting point of two major fault lines – the Northern Anatolian Fault and the East Anatolian Fault – according to geologists. Dozens of aftershocks were felt in the region in the hours after the quake.The village of Okcular was the worst hit.. Ali Saglam, deputy governor of Elazig, said search and rescue teams are searching the rubble."According to the information that we got from the technical teams on the ground, there shouldn't be anyone left in the rubble by now. But the search and rescue operations are continuing,” Saglam said. “Most of the houses that were demolished in the villages are not cement houses. ... A strong 6-0-magnitude earthquake rocked eastern Turkey, leveling buildings and homes and killing at least 57 people while leaving several more trapped under debris.Rescue crews are still searching through rubble to find survivors in the Elazig province but several of the buildings in the surrounding villages were completely destroyed. One of those villages was Okcular where at least 17 people were confirmed dead and as many as 30 homes lay in ruins.Officials have said a number of the injuries suffered from the quake came as panicked people jumped from windows or balconies.The 6.0 quake has been followed by more than 40 aftershocks, leaving residents fearful of returning to their homes. Voters in Switzerland overwhelmingly rejected a proposal that would have provided state-funded lawyers for animals in court cases.While animal rights groups had argued that there had been several cases of cruelty going unpunished nearly 70 percent of the voters turned back the proposal. Iraq’s parliamentary elections have been marred by multiple attacks across the country, leaving at least 35 people dead and scores more injured.Despite a heavy security presence throughout the country two buildings were destroyed by mortars in the capital of Baghdad while a number of attacks in other cities were reported.Even with the violence voters wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to cast their ballots as long lines at polling stations were standard. That violence included the destruction of a residential building in Baghdad that left 25 people dead.Much of the violence was being pinned on Sunni extremists who were attempting to stop other Sunnis from voting. A Pakistani airstrike on a building in the country’s northwest region of Mohmand has killed at least 16 militants, one of them believed to be a top commander for the Taliban.According to reports a number of helicopters fired on a building where several militants had been gathered and after the attack Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik announced Maulana Faqir Mohammed was likely killed in the strike.Faqir Mohammed was said to meeting with another top commander in the hideout when the strike occurred. Shortly after the strike Malik told reporters “I would be surprised if he's alive. At least eleven soldiers belonging to the Philippine army have been killed and seven more left injured after their reconnaissance platoon on the island of Mindoro was ambushed by rebels.According to reports as many as 60 guerrillas belonging to the New People’s Army opened fire on the patrol as they were positioned outside Mansalay township. Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak is said to be resting comfortably in a German clinic after undergoing successful surgery to treat an inflamed gall bladder.Mubarak, 81, was in Germany to hold talks with Chancellor Anglea Merkel when he began complaining of pain.The Egyptian leader was said to have spoken with family and his medical team following the surgery and is now resting in the intensive care unit. With Greece struggling to bring stability to its financial sector and recover from a devastating economic collapse German Chancellor Angela Merkel has vowed to provide support for the country yet stopped short of offering any financial assistance.Merkel pledged to “stand helpfully by Greece’s side” but is well aware of the attitude of most Germans who do not support the idea of using taxpayer money to bail out a country that intentionally hid its massive debt in order to secure favorable loans.Merkel is meeting with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou who is said to be hoping to secure a commitment of support if his country can’t raise money from the markets. An early morning bus crash near Phoenix, Arizona has left at least six people dead and several others seriously injured.According to initial reports the bus was traveling on Interstate 10 just south of Phoenix when it collided with a car and rolled over. In his first visit to Moscow since winning the presidency of the Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and the two leaders pledged to end tensions between their countries and build a stronger relationship.Yanukovych represents a break from the Ukraine’s previous Pro-Western government, a government that was often at odds with Russia on a number of policies.During Yanukovych’s campaign he vowed to strengthen ties with Russia while keeping a solid relationship with the West. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has said it could take “three to four years” before her country recovers from the devastating earthquake that killed more than 800 people in February.The 8.8 magnitude quake that struck Concepcion leveled buildings, homes and bridges as well as much of the infrastructure in rural areas surrounding Chile’s second city. In a radio address delivered over Chilean airwaves Bachelet said reconstruction would require international aid and a significant portion of the government’s backing over the next few years.Bachelet completes her term in office next week and will be replaced by President-elect Sebastian Pinera who will be inheriting a country desperate for normalcy.As it stands, estimates have suggested the cost of damage due to the earthquake is $15-$30 billion, a figure that will most likely require the country to seek assistance from the World Bank.While Chile is desperate for recovery the country has also been dealing with anumber of aftershocks that have left people

At least 14 people have been killed and several more left wounded after two polling stations were targeted by suicide bombers and a busy market was hit by a deadly blast during Iraq’s first day of parliamentary elections.The suicide bombings at polling stations in Baghdad were said to have killed seven people while a mortar attack on a crowded market in the city claimed seven lives as well.In the first polling station attack in the Mansur district three soldiers were killed and within 30 minutes a second blast in central Baghdad killed four more people.According to reports the market attack, which occurred earlier in the day, was meant to hit a polling station but missed. Of the seven killed in that attack, four were children.Thursday marked the beginning of parliamentary elections but the majority of Iraqis will head to the polls on Sunday. A massive wave struck a Cypriot-owned cruise ship off the coast of France on Wednesday, killing two people and injuring six.According to reports a 26-foot wave slammed into the Louis Majesty as it sailed near the French port of Marseilles. The cruise ship had been sailing from Barcelona to Genoa when the incident occurred. A spokesman for the cruise ship owner, Louis Cruise Lines, said the vessel was struck by three large waves.At the time of the wave strike there were 1,350 passengers and 580 crew members.
