Day one of the NCAA college basketball tournament featured a number of upsets as Georgetown, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Marquette and Richmond all fell to double-digit seeds and as the day two begins there will be number of schools with a newfound respect for the Mid-Majors and their capabilities come March Madness.Number one seeds Duke and Syracuse will get their NCAA tournament underway on Friday and while neither team is expected to face trouble both schools would like to send a message to the rest of the field.The Blue Devils open with Arkansas-Pine Bluff who earned the right to face Duke after knocking off Winthrop in the play-in game. The #3 Baylor Bears needed a late surge to get past #14 Sam Houston State on Thursday, turning back a determined Bearkats squad 68-59 to advance to the second round of the South Region.Baylor was led by Ekpe Udoh who scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while LaceDarius Dunn added 13 points and 6 assists.Sam Houston State did an admirable job staying close despite a dismal 6-31 shooting from beyond the three-point line and a 7-13 performance from the charity stripe. Danero Thomas buried a 15-foot jumper as time expired to lift the #13 Murray State Racers past the #4 Vanderbilt Commodores 66-65 in West Region action on Thursday.Vandy was able to grab a 65-64 lead after Jermaine Beal sank a pair of free-throws with 12 seconds left but the Commodores failed to grab a rebound, knocking the ball out of bounds to set up Thomas’ game-winner.Murray State managed to shot 47 percent from beyond the three-point line but were a dismal 9-17 from the free-throw line. Backed by 37 points from Jimmer Fredette and another 26 points from Michael Loyd Jr. the #7 BYU Cougars managed to knock off the #10 FSU Seminoles in double overtime 99-92 to advance into the second round of the West Region.BYU shot 43 percent from beyond the three-point line and were 25-32 from the foul-line while limiting their turnovers to just 12 in the game. The #2 Villanova Wildcats avoided one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history on Thursday, clawing their way back and eventually getting past the #15 Robert Morris Colonials 73-70 in overtime in South Region action.Villanova was simply brutal from the floor, shooting just 35% on the day with Scottie Reynolds leading the way in futility hitting just two of his 15 shots. While Reynolds hit just two buckets he managed to finish with 20 points thanks to a 15-16 performance from the foul-line. The Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament will feature a pair of schools that are strong favorites to make a deep toward the national championship. Both the Kansas Jayhawks and Georgetown Hoyas will see action on Thursday while Tennessee and UNLV will both try to avoid upset bids to advance.It will be the #8 UNLV Rebels (25-8) getting things started in the Midwest Region as they take on the #9 Northern Iowa Panthers (28-4). UNLV has had a solid season with impressive wins over Louisville and Arizona out of conference. Northern Iowa has also put together a strong season having dropped just three games since November 21.Northern Iowa should score the minor upset in the game. Tip Off set for 7:10 p.m. ET.The #3 Georgetown Hoyas (23-10) will be facing the #14 Ohio Bobcats (21-14) in their opening round game. The NCAA Tournament will kick off its second half of Day One with East Region action that features a number of national title contenders, chief among them the Kentucky Wildcats. Seeking redemption for a disappointing regular season, the Texas Longhorns could also put together a solid run if their talent comes together at the right time.The #1 Kentucky Wildcats (32-2) are stacked with young talent and that will be on display when they take on the #16 East Tennessee State Buccaneers (20-14) on Thursday. Kentucky is clearly the better team but East Tennessee won’t be starring wide-eyed as they faced Louisville and Tennessee in the regular season and while they lost they weren’t embarrassed. The 2010 NCAA college basketball tournament kicks off on Thursday and in the South Region four games will be played with each game featuring a school that could make a deep run in the annual affair.Getting things started in the South Region will be the #6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (23-11) and the #11 Old Dominion Monarchs (26-8). This could be one of the more interesting first-round matchups of the tournament as Notre Dame locked up a tournament berth with a late run in the Big East while Old Dominion took care of business in the CAA. While the Monarchs were solid in the CAA they had their challenges against other teams that made the NCAA tournament with losses to Richmond, Missouri and Northern Iowa; they did beat Georgetown. As for Notre Dame, a 10-8 record in the Big East was made possible with wins over Pittsburgh, Georgetown, UConn and Marquette to close the regular season.Notre Dame has too many weapons for Old Dominion and advances. By a matter of minutes the West Region will kick off the 2010 NCAA Tournament and the opening game could cause serious problems for several brackets as the #7 BYU Cougars (29-5) take on the #10 Florida Gators (21-12). While many are picking Florida to knock off BYU the Cougars did play in the tough Mountain West Conference. That being said BYU did lose twice to New Mexico and twice to UNLV. The Gators enter the NCAA Tournament having dropped four of their last five games.BYU should hold off Florida. The NCAA Tournament will begin on Thursday afternoon but for Winthrop (19-13) or Arkansas-Pine Bluff (17-15) it will end on Tuesday night as the two teams matchup in the play-in game with the winner going on to face the South Region number one seed Duke Blue Devils on Friday.Winthrop earned their trip to the play-in game after a surprising run through the Big South conference tournament where they knocked off Liberty, Radford and Coastal Carolina to capture the title. For the second time this season Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin has been suspended, landing a two-game ban after a boarding hit he placed on Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell during Monday night’s game.Ovechkin, a two-time MVP in the NHL, will have to forfeit nearly $230,000 in salary for the suspension as he missed Washington’s upcoming games against Florida on Tuesday and Carolina on Thursday.Earlier this year Ovechkin was handed a two-game suspension and the hit on Monday night made the 24-year-old a repeat offender.The hit in question involved Ovechkin pushing Campbell from behind into the boards. As a result Campbell suffered a broken clavicle and a broken rib. The Cleveland Browns made a big statement on Saturday, agreeing to a two-year deal with quarterback Jake Delhomme, a deal which will pay him $7 million in 2010. That $7 million, coupled with the $12.7 million from the Carolina Panthers, puts $19.7 million in Delhomme’s account.With Delhomme signing the end could be near for Browns QB Brady Quinn who had been drafted with the belief he could be the answer but has shown little to cement that status.Cleveland’s decision to go with Delhomme made it clear they weren’t ready to entrust the quarterback position to Quinn, opting instead to put the ball in the hands of a 35-year-old. The Ohio State Buckeyes moved into the Big Ten tournament finals after knocking off the Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday 88-81 in double overtime.With the loss the Illini remain on the bubble and will have to hope the NCAA tournament selection committee gives them the nod on Sunday.
